With 2 parts of a 20minute-ish interview video that has been uploaded on 한국경제TV (WOWTV)’s very own YouTube channel we get to know about SOMETHING SPECIAL, Korea’s first-ever TV format agency focused on creative talents, specializing in content development, production and distribution for the global market, also, of course, the CEO Jinwoo Hwang.

PART1

PART 2

As Korean Culture is at its peak especially in the entertainment industry and of course the k-contents itself, most people over the world probably have ever watched any Korean content even in short, we know that the K-Content nowadays is no longer enjoyed by Koreans only but became a global product.

After his 20 years long career as a broadcast producer, Jinwoo Hwang said that he wanted to try to step up more globally to link the K-content broadly overseas. It included the ‘way of storytelling’ or simply called the program’s format and the know-how of the production. The CEO of Something Special also mentioned that we are already in the Age of Disruption where anyone can easily access and consume various content, not only English-based ones, such as through OTT like Netflix we are all already familiar with. This speediness of contents can be spread usually being called Travel Fast and Far-off.

Jinwoo Hwang also explained, the reason why they chose ’Something Special’ as their name was because, in the content field, we often hear the question ’what’s something new?’ as this field always seeking brand new ideas, so, we respond to that question with ‘we provide SOMETHING SPECIAL’. Being the expert in Format Solutions and Global Content Producing.

The CEO also said that he also was the first Asian to be part of FRAPA (Format Recognition and Protection Association) which act as an organization to protect the content idea and its format from plagiarism.

Something Special also actively joins the content market-related annual events such as Upfront, MIPTV, MIPCOM, and BCWW (Broadcast Worldwide)

Jinwoo Hwang said that we indeed can’t deny that language barrier in content in industry is still a thing, but the most important point is how we convey it to the global market.

Lastly, with the existence of Something Special the CEO hopes that a lot of people keep supporting and loving K-Contents as much as the hard work behind it because it will become the biggest strength for the growth of K-Content.
